Project Description

The Société de développement commercial du District Central invites further reflection on the future of 50/150 Louvain W. Each idea will create a Collective Citizen Work.

A design brainstorm wagon was held in June 2021 to consult the neighborhood residents and workers on their ideas for urban redevelopment opportunities for the land at 50-150 Louvain West located in the heart of the District Central. This process was also carried out in collaboration with leaders and professionals in the area.

As part of the Fab City Campus event on August 13 and 14, the Société de développement commercial du District Central invites citizens of the area as well as visitors, young and old, to continue the reflection on the site. They will be able to express themselves on the future of the Louvain lot by exchanging with the facilitator. Each of the ideas shared about this vast 650,000 sq. ft. lot will be inscribed, assembled with each other and displayed on site to create a Collective Citizen Work. This work will be supported by the furniture. The activity offered during the Campus will therefore be an opportunity to make a gesture towards “Fabricating the Commons”. The reflection will continue with an internet survey. Visitors will be able to read and be inspired by the results of the ideation charrette, which will be displayed at the kiosk.

An initiative of

The District Central is the 4th largest employment hub in Montréal, with more than 1,800 businesses and industries generating over 25,000 jobs. It covers a vast territory of 3 km² which is undergoing a requalification from an industrial sector to a business sector. It is known for its legendary Chabanel sector where the fashion industry is still active and where an aggregate of bold and innovative designers is bringing a wind of renewal and growth to the area. A new wave of daring, creative and determined entrepreneurs is settling in and regrouping around three important business poles: design, urban manufacturing and technology. Today, companies such as SSENSE, Pixmob, Big Bang ERP, Maison Marie Saint Pierre, Matt & Nat, Lufa Farms, Terra Café, Bois Urbain, Communautique and CIOT are established in the Central District. Thanks to them, the textile district has become the design district, factories are being transformed into urban factories and the technology industry is taking root.
